DWS Learning Series – Lesson # 2



Here’s the easy way to write an awesome bio.

You hate talking about yourself so you have never written a bio or About Us page.  After all, who would be interested in YOU?  You’re ordinary, right?

Actually, it turns out that you’re not ordinary after all.  You’re really very interesting. That’s why your “About” page is probably one of the most visited pages on your website.   Go on; check your stats and you’ll probably be surprised. We’re human and we love to know about other people.  I always check the ‘About’ page, don’t you?  I read the bio at the end of an article.  I want to know who is talking to me – who I’m dealing with.

That means your bio and ‘About’ page give you a fabulous chance to connect with people who might be interested in what you have to say.  That’s the first step towards them becoming your customer.


8 questions we need answered in your bio.

Now, don’t panic.  I’m here to make writing about yourself and telling your story a little bit easier.  Let’s start by answering these questions.  They will form the basis of your bio.

  1. What inspired you to start your business?
  2. What problem do you solve for your clients?
  3. What are you really good at, professionally?
  4. What excites you about your business?
  5. What interests you in your personal life?
  6. Do you have a hobby or do something unusual?
  7. Is there something you want to publicise?  E.g. new book out or winning an award.
  8. Where will people find you?  What is your website address?

Ok, so now what?


The Bio Template.

Time to put it into some sort of order.  Here’s a little template which I’ve used with my clients. You can adapt it to suit your needs.  Just add your information and there’s your bio.

(Name) is a (job title) who went into business because he/she (1).  He/she spends her days (2) for her clients and has been known to (3).  He/she finds herself becoming really fired up/excited/motivated when (4).  When he/she is not working  (5) and when the kids are in bed/the dog is behaving/the stars line up he /she(6).

Currently, he/she is (7).  You can find out more about (name) at (8)


Here’s an example of the completed template.

Jo is a gardener who went into business because she wanted more flowers in the world. She spends her days planning gardens for her clients and has been known to create intricate and award winning displays.  She finds herself becoming really fired up when bird pick the fruit from her fruit trees or the weeds defy her orders to be gone!  When she is not working, she potters in her own garden and when the kids are in bed, she sneaks a quiet wine with her husband as she watches the stars.

Now I have a few bio tips to share with you.

  • Did you notice that the bio in the template is written in the third person?  It’s so much easier to write your bio when you feel as though you’re writing about someone else.
  • You can take this same principle & use it to write your ‘About’ page but make sure you use “I’ instead of “he’ or “she.”  It’s supposed to be your personal story on that page, so own it.
  • Write a short bio and a longer bio. The short bio is great for adding to the end of articles but you may need a longer one when being introduced on a new site, or to add to some marketing material.
  • Write different versions of your bio to suit your different groups and purposes.  It is good to be light-hearted in certain places, but in other you will need to take a more professional approach.
  • Don’t ignore your bio once it’s written.  It needs to be updated to reflect the inevitable changes that come along.


No matter how you write your bio, be honest in your content.  You are in control of what you tell people but make sure to reveal a little of yourself.  Remember, this is where the magic starts and people begin to connect with you.  It’s that little bit of YOU that will encourage them to pick up the phone or send you an email. So, get to it.  Give us some insight into the person you truly are.  You never know who is looking for someone just like you.
