Sometimes, when I’m browsing the interwebs, I come across articles about what a ‘successful business woman’ does. These articles are littered with tales of 5am wake-ups and lunch-time yoga sessions, and are usually accompanied by photos of immaculate workspaces, sassy outfits and perfectly coiffed hair-dos.

They always hammer home the fact that I’m a bit… different. Unique. I am not your typical ‘successful business woman’ poster-gal. In fact, far from it. Though I’ve been running my own design business for 5 years now, and have notched up hundreds of happy-shiny clients, my daily work flows are not exactly what you’d call glamorous or glossy.

Not at all.

For starters, I like to work in the dark. Yep. And I don’t always pick up the phone. And I rarely bother with such mundane things as bras. (Too much information?!)

Today I wanted to bust through some of the stereotypes of success and give you a behind-the-curtains glimpse at what life in the wild world of online biz really looks like. Here are some of my confessions about my secret office behaviour…

1. I don’t like talking on the phone. Nuh-uh. I avoid it at all costs. Don’t get me wrong, I love to connect with inspiring business women, but I have never been a huge fan of chit-chat. Heaps of my clients have become friends over the last five years, but that’s because of the interwebs, mostly. Bless thee email.

2. I like working in my comfy clothes. Which means I don’t wear heels, ever. (And I’ve already confessed my bias towards bra-lessness). I’m a creative who likes her casuals. Those corporate power suits leftover from the 80s just don’t seem right in today’s world where everyone’s running businesses from home.

3. I sometimes don’t work at all. Okay, so that doesn’t sound great, but I am a big believer in striking while the iron is hot. When I am feeling the design groove, I work my butt off and totally kill it. But some days, the creativity just isn’t there. So I don’t force it, I don’t whip myself into compliance. Instead of working, I’ll pop into Ikea (that place is like crack for refreshing the creative juices), go out for coffee or just stare at my computer screen. This way of working means I’m working with my energy flows, not against them. I get way more done, I never miss a deadline, and I get to indulge in the odd midday session of GIRLS.

4. Online shopping is my weakness. Working from home has many pros. One of which is that you can shop online whenever you wish. Another is that you’re always home to receive your deliveries. Win-win! (I prefer to downplay the cons, like the distressing effect on my credit card!) Procrastination used to mean idly twiddling my thumbs, but not anymore! No sir! Not when I can be surfing eBay and Etsy and ASOS (oh my). Procrastination is online shopping. And it’s glorious.

5. I don’t always know what I am doing. I say YES to most projects that come my way, even if I don’t know what I am doing 100% of the time. I say YES because it is an opportunity and I think you can turn an opportunity into anything you want, even if you have no idea what you’re doing. (Hell, that’s why Google exists!) Fake it til you make it, I say. And it ain’t steered me wrong yet.

So these are my confessions. My no-longer-secret quirks and idiosyncrasies that are the reality of a successful biz-lady working for herself. I hope this has helped to burst some bubbles and breakthrough some barriers.

Now it’s over to you. Do you find yourself comparing your biz-life to the shiny-pretty pictures you see online? What are your weird and wacky work habits? Share away in the comments below.
